It’s a little stupid to say that, but “Beyond: Two Souls” surprises me for the first time after I finish it.
Belief to my own subjective opinion, I do not read up on interviews, leaks and press releases in which the concept and the form are explained, but put the dish in the machine relatively unprepared.
I expect a caricature or continuation of the form of the “interactive drama” that was David Cage and Quantum Dream’s previous release, ” Heavy Rain “. And I get it, but I do not notice it myself.
No « game over »
Beyond: Two Souls review shows you a tiny fraction of all the events that are in the game. The exciting thing you can experience only when plunged into the events of the game already. Nevertheless, gameplay is almost non-existent. The player who plays PlayStation for challenge, exploration of open worlds, logical challenges, heavy guns, and dominance of minorities, monsters, or other players should rule out right away.
There is no thing called “game over”.
If you drive a motorcycle, you can not drive off the road nor tute. The interface is minimized and simplified to emphasize what you do, not that and how or how well you do it. That is, a story must be told.
To brush your teeth or do not brush …
As Cage himself indicates in interviews (as I have now read), “Beyond: Two Souls” is not necessarily a game, but an interactive drama. The choice you sometimes notice you take, but sometimes not – and here it comes – just like in reality.
A person who always kisses every morning and evening does not take that choice only once, but every morning and evening. The possibility is there, like the possibility of being left alone. And, most importantly, you never know if it will follow from time to time and what it will be.
That’s how it goes with choices I take on behalf of main character Jodie Holmes. The game feels linear, according to Cage, because I do not notice half of the choices I’ve taken. There is a white dot here and a white dot there and I press them.
Jodie has a more complicated life than myself:
Unbreakably associated with some kind of spiritual “entity”, an invisible consciousness that can be ruled by one or another player number two, interacting and influencing the physical world.
CIA and father figure / researcher Nathan Dawkins (Willem Dafoe) are quick to conquer Jody’s life and, from her childhood to early adulthood, she, like the player, has little to say in relation to what’s happening in the action plan.
If you fail to solve one or the other task, then it will solve it, the game will continue essentially the same track as it would otherwise.
Psychological dress-up doll
The main motive becomes, instead of plot and apocalypse, Jodie himself. The game is not marketed as an action game, horror game or a game about CIA or ghosts, but a psychological, spiritual adventure drama with a few touches of thriller.
It is, in other words, about the protagonist and her life and psyche from 8 to 23 years old.
Although the action, scenes, situations that Jodie end up in the main are the same, her reactions, attitude and toneele in the dialogues are up to the player. These do not affect the big picture, the actual plot, before it approaches the last part of the game, but still gives rise to disputes and fundamental differences in each scene.
The outer action is adorned, or an explanation and apology for what I perceive as a kind of psychological dress-up doll. The most interesting, therefore, becomes the picture of Jodies’s emotional life I am left with, and as I have myself prepared, through my choices at the level of detail.
What kind of tone did I choose when I cheated on him the guy, and was it or did not it happen to me on that date, and was it because of the dress selection, or maybe the food, or because I had or did not clean the apartment?
What is most important to me, people I love, people I will meet and love, or my own life? Do I need to live?
The mindset lies with me, as much as Jodie, and so Cage tries to cope with an important challenge that visual media often struggle with: They can hardly depict psychological processes. You can see the character outside.
